Sending documents to Wenhaston Word

We like to receive contributions to the Wenhaston Word by email if possible but unfortunately we can only accept documents in a format that our software can understand! Ideally we would like documents sent as plain text if it is editorial copy (ie something that will form the body of an article) or Adobe Acrobat PDF if it is an advert or something where the formatting is important.

This can be a problem for MS Publisher users as most Microsoft software does not directly support Adobe Acrobat. The best answer is to install a PDF Writer - this is a little piece of software that installs a sort of "virtual printer" and you use it by "printing" to it from any Windows application and the program creates a standard Adobe Acrobat PDF file. There are plenty of these to choose from and some of them are open source and thus free to use. Here are some of the better known ones:

  1. PDF Creator - Open Source. see http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/
  2. Adobe Acrobat - the principal commercial offering and thus quite costly. See http://www.adobe.com/
  3. CutePDF: Several versions available including a basic freeware one for non-commercial use. See http://www.cutepdf.com/Products/CutePDF/writer.asp
  4. Drumlin Security. PDF system built around a digital rights management server. The basic PDF writer is free to download. See http://www.drumlinsecurity.co.uk/download.html

Photographs are best sent as ordinary JPG files. Please do not send MS Word files with embedded photographs as photograph JPGs are much easier to work with. Please let us know the name of the photographer so that we can credit copyright.

Adverts can be sent as PDF (see above) or even as an image such as JPG but bear in mind that JPG format is designed for photos not text and converting a design to JPG format will result in a loss of quality. In this case a PNG (portable network graphic) would be better or a TIFF. We can open most standard image files.

Text for Editorial is best sent as straight text in the body of an email rather than as an attachment. We can accept PDF attachments or RTF but you should understand that we will strip out all formatting before we incorporate it in the Wenhaston Word.
